State implementing revised strategy for disabled

The implementation for the revised strategy for people with disabilities, covering their needs form birth to old age, while addressing prejudice and discrimination, was a top priority for the government, Deputy Welfare Minister Marilena Evangelou said on Saturday.

Opening the general meeting of the Cyprus Confederation of Organisations of the Disabled (Kysoa), on behalf of President Nikos Christodoulides, Evangelou said the deputy ministry had prepared a revised national strategy and action plan for 2024 to 2028, in collaboration with organisations for the disabled and the social partners.

Evangelou said securing the rights of people with disabilities and addressing prejudice and discrimination, was a priority.

The strategic aims of the revised strategy covered people with disabilities from birth to old age, with timely child and family intervention, unified and comprehensive education, access to the natural and structured environment, transport and information, access to health and therapy services, adequate standards of living and independent living, inclusion in employment, participation in cultural activities, entertainment, spare time activities and sports.

Evangelou said full incorporation, support and strengthening of people with disabilities was a common aim with Kysoa.

She added that much more can be achieved through dialogue and the exchange of views.
