Speed a factor in deadly Corvette crash in North Carolina, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A man died in a North Raleigh crash Monday morning when police say he was going too fast in his Chevrolet Corvette along a street and lost control.

The wreck happened just after 7:55 am. when a man was driving west on Westgate Road, west of Leesville Road and a few blocks south of I-540, according to a Raleigh Police Department news release.

Officers said that as the driver of the Corvette approached the Fairbanks Drive intersection the car entered the left turn lane to pass stopped or slowed traffic in the straight travel lane.

“The vehicle continued going straight, striking the curb on the right side of the road, and traveled down the sidewalk for a short distance,” the news release said.

The Corvette then traveled across Westgate Road, hitting a tree and fence, police said.

Lawrence Pischke, 58, was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died, the news release said.

“Speed is suspected to be a factor in this crash,” officers said. “This case remains under investigation.”
