Southampton now handed ‘huge boost’ over £22.5m star at St Mary’s

Southampton defender Tino Livramento returning to the training pitch is a “huge boost” for the Saints, says Tom Barclay of The Sun.

The 19-year-old has been out injured but recently took to social media to show that he is able to run on grass again.

What happened to Livramento?

Last summer, Livramento left Chelsea for Southampton in a £5m deal, which quickly proved to be a bargain.

In no time, the English right-back cemented a place in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side. In total, he made 32 appearances in all competitions before sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

It kept him out for the last part of the previous season and has seen him miss the beginning of this one.

However, it now looks like Livramento is getting closer to making a return, though Hasenhuttl said last month that he does not expect him to be available before the World Cup.

What has Barclay said about Livramento and Southampton?

Barclay believes Livramento stepping back on to grass can only be viewed as good news.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, The Sun journalist said: “Southampton are still worried about the lack of goals, but suddenly they’ve got some really exciting young players and Livramento, arguably on his day, is the most exciting of them all. So to see him back, at least on the training pitch, is a huge boost.”

Just how good is Livramento?

Livramento looked like he was going to the very top before his injury. And at just 19 years of age, he still can.

As per FBref, the £22.5m-rated Southampton star has ranked in the 83rd percentile for dribbles completed and the 96th for interceptions among full-backs over the last year, showing that he can attack and defend.

Speaking to talkSPORT about Livramento last year, his team-mate Theo Walcott said: “There’s a future star there, but again, we need to be careful as we always do, but it’s why we love football, isn’t it? I can’t complain. he’s been absolutely fantastic.”

The former Arsenal man later went on to add: “He’s so strong with the ball and very clever and technically he is fantastic.”

Looking at all of the above, there is no doubt that Hasenhuttl and the St Mary’s faithful will want to see Livramento return to action soon.

And once he does, he should give the Saints a boost at the back and going forward, with the England U21 international a very well-rounded full-back.
