A Russian drone attack overnight injured one person and damaged five homes in Ukraine’s Kyiv region, local authorities said on Monday.
Kyiv region governor Ruslan Kravchenko said the attack did not cause significant damage to infrastructure in the area surrounding the capital.
A statement on the Telegram app said the air force had shot down 53 of the 56 drones launched by Russia in total during the attack on central, northern and southern Ukraine.
The Ukrainian military said air defense units destroyed nearly 20 drones heading towards the capital, Kyiv, itself.
“Russian-launched attack drones were heading towards Kyiv from several directions and in different groups… According to preliminary information, there were no casualties or damage in Kyiv,” Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv military administration, said on Telegram.
Reuters witnesses reported a series of loud explosions from what appeared to be active air defence systems.
Russia has been pounding Ukraine with missiles and drones during the nearly 30-month-old war, causing significant damage to the power grid and other civilian infrastructure.
There has been no immediate comment from Russia. Moscow says its air strikes are only targeting infrastructure vital to the Ukrainian war effort.
