Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened on Wednesday to use nuclear weapons if any country attacks him, and that any conventional attack on Russia with the support of a nuclear force would be considered a joint attack.
Putin explained at the beginning of a meeting of the Russian Security Council attended by senior officials that proposals had been made to make changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, and that he would like to emphasize one of the main proposed changes.
He said: “Among the proposals is to consider aggression against Russia by any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear state, as a joint attack on the Russian Federation.”
He added: “The conditions for Russia’s transition to the use of nuclear weapons are also clearly defined, and Moscow will consider this step if it detects the beginning of a massive launch of missiles, fighter jets or drones towards it.”
He noted that Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons if it or Belarus is subjected to any aggression, including attacks using conventional weapons.
