Roy Cooper's veto to impact eastern North Carolina town's affordable housing

Roy Cooper's veto to impact eastern North Carolina town's affordable housing

MAYSVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — A veto from Governor Roy Cooper is set to impact the Town of Maysville’s Affordable Housing Project.

The bill was also going to provide $50 million to the Office of Recovery and Resiliency. That office was going to give funding to areas in the state with damage from Hurricane Matthew and Florence.

The town is trying to build 40 units for affordable housing but Town Manager Schumata Brown said if this bill doesn’t go through, it will be the end of the project.

“It’s definitely disappointing and I can understand some of the politics in that bill,” Brown said. “Here in Maysville, we were looking at that one piece of the bill of gaining momentum back into affordable housing. So, very unfortunate that the project got caught in the political side of things and hopefully that can get worked out.”

Brown said Maysville doesn’t qualify for funding from the state’s Housing Finance Agency because they don’t have a pharmacy.
