Roger Federer explains The Shard to Andy Murray as Novak Djokovic jokes

Roger Federer brings down the curtain on his illustrious career as The Laver Cup this weekend marks the end of an era.

The Swiss legend is undoubtedly one of the greatest players ever to have played the game, some rating him as the best ever.

Federer never missed a trick on court and it seems that his observation and awareness are not limited to tennis.

Many top sports performers will travel extensively but will take in little of their surroundings, with free time being limited.

However, a video clip of the European squad on a walkabout in London prior to the action at the O2 Arena shows that this does not appear to be the case with the eight-time Wimbledon Champion.

It is, in fact, British legend Andy Murray who appears uncertain of the London landscape with Federer playing tour guide.

Roger Federer explains The Shard to Andy Murray

Murray can be seen pointing towards The Shard, the tallest building in Britain since its completion in 2012, and asking: “What building is this one?”, with Federer confirming it was the Shard.

Murray, then continued: “That is The Shard, yeah? What’s happened to it?” referring to the building’s incomplete look, which, according to an architect on the project, “Allows the building to breathe.”

Federer confirmed this saying: “That’s how it is, it’s like a broken glass”.

Novak Djokovic appears interested, looking across at The Shard, while Federer continues: “But this is London, we know that”, seemingly confused that any regular visitor to the UK capital would not be aware of the seventh tallest building in Europe.

Djokovic then comments: “Andy, he’s giving you lessons about London”.

What does come over in the video is the respect and camaraderie between the Europe team, who boast four giants of the sport in Rafael Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, and Murray, along with up-and-coming stars such as Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The Laver Cup set to begin this weekend

The event sees Europe, captained by the legendary Bjorn Borg, go up against the rest of the world led by American icon John McEnroe.

Federer’s confirmation that this will be his final tournament before retirement gives the event even greater significance.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner, along with Nadal and Djokovic has arguably taken tennis to another level.

He will be remembered for his technical brilliance and perceived economy of effort along with his longevity. Federer has indicated that he would like to stay involved in tennis after retirement though given his knowledge of London there may be opportunities for him within the tourism industry.
