Between fate, inevitability, and following preventive measures, lie many inspiring human stories that carry many manifestations of clinging to hope for recovery. Overnight, Reem Ahmed, a thirty-year-old employee, was surprised to find out that she had skin cancer in the shoulder area, despite not suffering from any symptoms.
Reem’s story began when she felt a strange color, sudden pain, and bleeding in her shoulder around a birthmark she was born with. She went to the doctor to investigate the matter, and the shock was that she had skin cancer, or what is known as melanoma, which is a type of cancer that develops in the melanocytes responsible for producing the pigment that gives the skin its color. This pigment is called melanin.
Reem quickly pulled herself together and went to a specialist doctor to begin the treatment journey, as she learned that this type of cancer can spread throughout the body if it is not treated immediately and correctly.
Reem stressed that the support of friends and loved ones was one of the most important reasons for the success of the treatment and recovery, in addition to the great sympathy of those around her, which gave her the energy to follow the instructions, and to remove the idea that it was a malignant tumor from her imagination, and to hold on to the hope of recovery from it, especially in light of her acquaintance with people who have actually survived many types of cancer thanks to the successful treatment in the Emirates, which includes psychological treatment and moral support. Reem mentioned that in addition to the genetic reason for the possibility of her getting skin cancer, her exposure to the sun randomly and for long periods when she was young and not using sunscreen is one of the reasons for the infection, as the treating doctor told her, who stressed the importance of promoting a healthy lifestyle to strengthen the immune system in fighting diseases, and she thanked the Friends of Cancer Patients Association for helping her overcome this difficult stage in her life.
Melanoma most often develops on skin that is exposed to the sun, including the arms, back, face and legs. It can also form in the eyes and, rarely, inside the body, such as in the nose or throat. The exact cause of all types of melanoma is unclear. But most melanomas are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Ultraviolet radiation, also known as UV radiation, comes from sunlight or tanning lamps and beds. Limiting your exposure to UV radiation may help reduce your risk of melanoma.
People under the age of 40, especially women, are more likely to develop melanoma. Knowing the symptoms of skin cancer can help ensure that cancerous changes are detected and treated before they spread. Successful treatment of melanoma is possible if the tumor is detected early.
