Protest over ‘coupist’ monument in Strovolos

The Pancyprian Association of Democratic Resisters held a protest on Saturday, over a monument being built in Strovolos that they say honours those involved in the coup against President Makarios in July 1974.

They described the protest as a symbolic one, and wore black as a sign of mourning for those who died in the fight against the coupists.

The association specified it would take stronger measures against the construction of the moment and in the meantime arranged meetings with political parties.

Last month, the head of the association wrote to Strovolos’ mayor, expressing “great concern” over the initiative.
