President Nikos Christodoulides has been invited to meet American President Joe Biden at the White House, CyBC reported on Sunday.
According to the channel’s correspondent in Washington Petros Kasfiki the meeting will take place on Wednesday in the Oval Office.
CyBC said a government source had confirmed the information.
It comes a few days after the first round of talks on the strategic dialogue between Cyprus and the USA in Nicosia this week and a few months after the signing of a defence agreement with the Pentagon.
According to CyBC sources in Washington, the invitation reflects the growing importance of Cyprus to the United States and the upgraded strategic role of the island.
The last time a Cyprus president was invited to the White House was in 1996 when President Glafkos Clerides held a meeting with then US President Bill Clinton.
