President says his government focuses on a human-centred approach

President Nikos Christodoulides said Sunday that since his government took office, they have addressed all major issues and have put specific actions on track for implementation through a human-centred approach.

Adding that March 2025 marks two years since his administration took office, he said that the “starting point and the end of our effort is our governance program, which I demand to be implemented in a consistent manner, because this is our social contract with the Cypriot people, to lead our country into the new era, to shape tomorrow together”.

Addressing the Political and Ideological Conference of the Edek party, in Nicosia, the president said that his work was also done with the substantial contribution of Edek, whose party participates in the government. He said that since assuming office, there were eight consecutive upgrades of the credit rating of the Cypriot economy from all rating agencies, and referred to the decrease of unemployment to a historic low, the resilience of the labour market.

Also, he said that the growth rate of the Cyprus economy is one of the highest in the European Union, while the public debt has recorded the largest decrease and the goal is to fall below 60 per cent in 2026. “It is an achievable goal,” he said.

Referring to the Cyprus issue, he said that he respects the views and sensitivities of all political forces adding that “the great goal for the liberation and reunification of our homeland, is a common one”.

He added that the government is making the best of its European status and the geostrategic advantage of Cyprus, institutionalises the excellent relations with all neighbouring states, strengthens the country diplomatically, upgrades its defence capability, expands all internal and external power factors, and strengthens its position through meaningful synergies that allow the country to pursue achievable goals.

Referring to migration, he said that Cyprus is no longer an attractive destination saying that the number of migrants who leave the country is now higher than the number of arrivals. He also spoke about addressing illegal employment and recalled the recent decision by the cabinet to remove the status of international protection from those who commit criminal acts.

He also spoke about the institutional reforms, the government support to households and businesses, the energy subsidy plans, the support to refugees, the measures for defence and security, the primary sector and the digitisation of the state services.
