Portable power stations recalled after man's death

(WJW) – Thousands of portable power stations are being recalled after a man’s death.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of around 5,700 HALO 1000 Portable Power Stations over concerns that the lithium-ion batteries in the units can overheat, potentially causing fires.

The recall follows a fatal incident in June 2022, when a 79-year-old man in Bradenton, Florida, died from smoke inhalation after a fire related to the power station.

The recall affects products sold by ZAGG Inc. of Midvale, Utah; Alliance Consumer Group (ACG) of Roanoke, Texas; and QVC Inc. of West Chester, Pennsylvania. The recalled power stations were sold between October 2021 and March 2022 for prices ranging from $1,000 to $1,300.

In addition to the fatality, the companies have received four other reports of fires involving the power stations, including two cases of smoke inhalation, one of which also involved burn injuries.

The HALO 1000 Portable Power Stations are high-capacity power banks designed for charging electronic devices. They feature three USB-A charge ports, a USB-C fast charge port, three AC outputs, two DC outputs, a DC socket, an LCD display, a built-in floodlight, and a collapsible handle.

Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled units immediately and contact the companies for a free replacement. The affected products were sold under the brand name “HALO” and are identifiable by the model number “HALO 1000” on the front of the unit.

The following HALO 1000 Portable Power Stations are included in this recall:
