PJP football advances to District 1-4A final with 46-0 win over Lower Moreland

No. 1 Pope John Paul II 46, No. 4 Lower Moreland 0 (District 1-4A semifinal)

The defending 4A district champs got within one win of repeating with a 46-0 demolition of No. 4 Lower Moreland on Friday night. The top-seeded Golden Panthers will host No. 2 Springfield Township, 42-21 winners over Bishop Shanahan, on Friday at 7 p.m.

No. 1 Central Bucks South 49, No. 16 Spring-Ford 7 (District 1-6A first round)

Spring-Ford’s unlucky season rife with injuries to key players came to an end at 4-7 Friday night when the Rams succumbed to the defending 6A champion and top seed in this year’s bracket. The Titans scored on their first play from scrimmage and never looked back and will next take on the winner of No. 8 Plymouth Whitemarsh-No. 9 Souderton at home next weekend.

No. 9 Marple Newtown 20, No. 8 Pottsgrove 0 (District 1-5A first round)

Despite getting to host a 5A first round contest, Pottsgrove couldn’t get its offense rolling against a strong Marple Newtown squad. The Falcons’ season ended at 7-4, while Marple advanced to take on top-seeded Springfield Delco, a 49-6 winner over Academy Park, on Friday night.

Field Hockey

No. 7 Boyertown 3, No. 4 Downingtown West 2 (District 1-3A Third Place Game)

Boyertown produced a strong tune-up performance ahead of next week’s PIAA Tournament, as the Bears went on the road to knock off Downingtown West and claim third place in the 3A bracket. Emily Ulrich’s first half goal knotted the score 1-1 at the break, and Ulrich again rallied her team from a one-goal deficit with another tally. Then, the selfless Ulrich found Kendal Gilbert in front of the cage for the game-winning goal midway through the fourth quarter. Addie Galianese made nine saves in goal in the victory.

No. 5 Methacton 2, No. 6 Avon Grove 1 (District 1-3A Fifth Place Game)

Methacton erased an early 1-0 deficit, and goals by Ceci Rehak and Carmela Maro led the Warriors to victory and allowed them to claim fifth place in the 3A bracket ahead of next week’s PIAA Tournament. Maro also picked up an assist on Rehak’s goal, and Maddie McKenney stopped one of two Avon Grove shots in the win.

No. 6 Upper Perkiomen 3, No. 5 Kennett 2 (District 1-2A Third Place Game)

Over in the 2A bracket, Upper Perkiomen claimed third place with an exciting 3-2 road win at Kennett. The Indians are set to compete in the PIAA Tournament, which will begin on Tuesday.

Boys Soccer

No. 9 Phoenixville 4, No. 7 Souderton 3 (District 1-4A Fifth Place Game)

Phoenixville made sure its offense was running red-hot heading into the state tournament, as the Phantoms claimed fifth place in the 4A bracket by pumping in four goals at Souderton. Phoenixville will open the PIAA Tournament on Tuesday at the top seed in District 11.

No. 5 Hill School 2, No. 12 SCH Academy 1 (PAISAA Tournament first round)

Hill secured a first round win over Springside Chestnut Hill Academy and advanced to the PAISAA quarterfinals at Phelps School on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

No. 7 Westtown School 4, No. 10 Perkiomen School 0 (PAISAA Tournament first round)

Perkiomen’s season came to an end on Friday as the Panthers fell at Westtown School in the PAISAA Tournament’s opening round.

Girls Tennis

1-1 Elliana DeCicco (PJP) def. 9-1 Roan Lion (St. Marys Area), 6-1, 6-0 (PIAA 2A Girls’ Singles first round)

2-1 Ilana Rosenthal (Wyoming Seminary) def. Elliana DeCicco (PJP), 6-0, 6-0 (PIAA 2A Girls’ Singles quarterfinals)

Pope John Paul II freshman Elliana DeCicco’s phenomenal first high school tennis season ended at the PIAA 2A Singles Championship on Friday. DeCicco, the only PAC tennis player to qualify as an individual at states, claimed a dominant first round victory over Roan Lion of St. Marys before getting swept by Wyoming Seminary’s Ilana Rosenthal in the quarterfinals.

Girls Soccer

No. 7 Perkiomen School 1, No. 10 Shipley School 0 (PAISAA Tournament first round)

Perkiomen School kept its season alive for at least one more game as the Panthers nabbed a thrilling overtime win over Shipley in the opening round of the PAISAA Tournament. The Panthers advanced to take on second-seeded Westtown School in next week’s quarterfinals.

No. 8 Germantown Academy 3, No. 9 Hill School 1 (PAISAA Tournament first round)

Hill’s season concluded on Friday with a 3-1 loss at eighth-seeded Germantown Academy in the opening round of the PAISAA Tournament.

Girls Volleyball

No. 2 Germantown Academy 3, No. 3 Perkiomen School 0 (PAISAA Tournament semifinal)

After opening the PAISAA Tournament with a win over Agnes Irwin, Perkiomen fell one match short of the championship as the Panthers fell in a straight-set sweep to GA on Friday.
