Penn State says Trump will not attend Saturday’s game against Ohio State

Former President Donald Trump will not attend Penn State’s football game against Ohio State Saturday at Beaver Stadium, the university announced Wednesday.

It was not immediately known why there was a change in plans.

With the presidential election set for Nov. 5, Trump made a campaign stop at a rally last Saturday at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center. It came days after it was reported that he planned to attend the Nittany Lions’ Big Ten showdown against Ohio State as a guest of a “private citizen” in a suite above the east stands.

“The university has been notified that former President Donald Trump will no longer be attending the Ohio State-Penn State football game,” a Penn State spokesman said.

Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported last Thursday that Trump, the Republican Party’s presidential nominee, was making plans to attend the football game.

Penn State later acknowledged that University Police and Public Safety and other local law enforcement officials were working with the U.S. Secret Service on what security steps had to be taken.

The Penn State-Ohio State game is expected to draw a sellout crowd of more than 110,000 people. It’s the first time that both teams are ranked in the top five since 1996. It will have a great impact on the Big Ten race and the College Football Playoff seedings and berths.
