Russia’s patience with not taking a nuclear response to Western actions in Ukraine is running out, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, warned yesterday.
While “no party has an interest in a nuclear conflict,” Russia has so far shown restraint in using its nuclear capabilities in response to Western intervention, particularly with regard to precision strikes deep inside Russian territory, he said in a message posted on his Telegram channel, as reported by the Russian news agency TASS. But he warned that “even the greatest level of patience has its limits.”
The warnings came after recent discussions in the United States about providing tactical missile systems to the Ukrainian military, which could enable Kiev to carry out deeper strikes into Russian territory.
The Kremlin also indicated that it is aware of the escalating threat, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying that Russia is preparing countermeasures.
