Opening date for Canterbury’s Ivy Brasserie in former home of Burton and Dorothy Perkins revealed

An opening date for the highly-anticipated arrival of a new Ivy restaurant in Kent has been confirmed.

The former Burton and Dorothy Perkins building in Canterbury city centre will be transformed into the swanky venue, with work underway to transform the eyesore.

First revealed by KentOnline in April, the Ivy later officially confirmed its second location in the county – releasing glossy images of what the inside will look like.

Now bosses have confirmed the Ivy Brasserie will open to the public on Tuesday, October 29.

However, KentOnline and kmfm are offering the chance for one lucky winner and three guests to attend the opening party on Thursday, October 24.

According to bosses, the Canterbury venue will create 140 jobs, hold 180 guests, and feature a private dining room alongside an outdoor terrace.

At the helm will be general manager Diogo Bolan, who brings expertise from The Ivy Wimbledon, and head chef Ilias Kalogiannis, who has more than a decade of experience.

The chain had originally wanted to build a rooftop dining venue boasting views of the Cathedral but ditched the scheme earlier this year in favour of only overhauling the first two floors.

Kent’s only other Ivy is in Tunbridge Wells.

Its impending arrival in Canterbury has been described as “fantastic”.

Cllr Pip Hazelton, city councillor for Westgate, said: “We’re all highly excited. I think it shows a real vote of confidence in Canterbury as a city centre and I know that my neighbours, residents and traders are all talking about it very positively.

“I know the market traders are looking forward to it increasing footfall.

“It will be fantastic having another permanent corner flagship business there as opposed to both an empty building or the series of temporary pop-up businesses that have been there over the last few years.

“Footfall is up in Canterbury and something like The Ivy is adding to that positive move forward as we recover from austerity and then obviously the pandemic.”

Cllr Michael Dixey, leader of the Liberal Democrat group and also representing Westgate, said: “I welcome this new business entirely.

“It is in a very prominent position and I hope it will continue to boost our hospitality sector.”

Ivy bosses say the city is the “perfect location” due to its rich history.

Managing director of The Ivy Collection Laura Mills said: “We’re thrilled to bring The Ivy experience to Canterbury.

“The city’s rich history and vibrant culture make it the perfect location for our next restaurant.

“We can’t wait to open our doors this autumn and become part of the Canterbury community.”

It will be open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night drinks.

The menu will include modern and seasonal dishes such as shepherd’s pie, blackened cod and artichoke and sweet potato tagine.

Drinks such as crafted cocktails, a variety of Champagne, and a selection of fine wines will also be on offer.
