Olivia Wilde Denies Harry Styles Spit on Chris Pine, Dodges Question About Florence Pugh Feud on ‘The Late Show’

People can’t stop talking about Don’t Worry Darling – and for good reason: there’s a lot going on. Thankfully, Olivia Wilde was on hand to chat on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday (Sept. 21) about Spit-Gate, her alleged feud with Florence Pugh, and other drama surrounding the film.

A quick recap: Rumors circulated that Wilde lacked professionalism on set and due to tardiness, the cast and crew would film without her. The director dismissed the claims and continued with the press circuit, giving Variety a few juicy details. She claimed to have fired Shia LaBeouf from the film, who originally acted opposite Pugh (in the role now played by Harry Styles). Wilde also told the outlet that LaBeouf was not “conducive” to the production.

LaBeouf responded with an email statement to Variety, saying he had quit the film. He accompanied the statement with a video sent to him from Wilde, which showed the director saying she was “heartbroken” and “this might be a bit of a wake-up call for Miss Flo.” Fast-forward to the movie’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Pugh declined to participate in the press conference, instead enjoying an aperol spritz at her leisure. (Oh, and Pugh’s hair and makeup team wore Miss Flo-branded tees.) Then, during the premiere event, Wilde and film actor Chris Pine were sitting side-by-side when Styles appeared to spit on Chris Pine’s lap while taking his seat – unearthing “Spit-Gate.”

Addressing the incident, Pine’s representation said, “This is a ridiculous story — a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation… Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine.”

Wilde echoed the statement while appearing on the late night show. She told Colbert, “It’s the perfect example of people looking for drama anywhere they can. Harry did not spit on Chris, in fact.”

The director added, “People can look at a video that shows evidence of someone not spitting on someone else and they’ll still see what they want to see. That is the creation of drama and that is clickbait.”

However, when asked about her rumored feud with Pugh, Wilde struggled to give a straightforward answer. She said, “I have nothing but respect for Florence’s talent, she’s fantastic. She’s on the set of her movie, Dune, right now, and there’s nothing cooler than a busy actress. I have nothing against her for any reason.”

When Colbert brought up the infamous aperol spritz moment, Wilde answered, “I think what’s funny is that I don’t feel like my male directing colleagues are answering questions about their cast.” The host agreed.

“You’re right. You’re exactly right, much in the same way that I want to go to victory, not on moral grounds, but on appetite rounds,” explained Colbert. “These are not questions to give a director. They should be talking about the movie itself, but these are the questions that have consumed this movie and I’m giving into appetite.”

The host went on to call male directors “monsters” and said, “even if every rumor of your movie were true, it’d be pretty light fare compared to Alfred Hitchcock or any of the great directors out there that we admire so much.”

Wilde insisted she is unswayed by the drama, given the final product of her film. She said, “We were trying to do something really ambitious. A lot of people did a lot of hard work. We made a movie during the pandemic, that’s like building a house in a hurricane. We can handle a little Twitter storm, that’s alright.”
