Efforts to open new vehicle crossing points in Nicosia will continue with determination, Turkish Cypriot Nicosia Mayor Mehmet Harmanci said on Tuesday.
He was speaking after a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.
“For a long time, we have been working to open a new vehicle crossing point in Nicosia,” he said.
“Ayios Dhometios has become the location for 65 per cent of all crossings, with people waiting up to one to one-and-a-half hours daily due to heavy traffic,” he said. “This causes significant suffering and disrupts important activities such as education and healthcare. Decongestion is essential.”
Harmanci said he and Tatar reviewed the situation after a recent dinner in New York. They agreed that technical teams from both sides should study all potential crossing points.
“We also emphasised the importance of dialogue and the exchange of information,” Harmanci concluded.
