Aiming to plant a total of 18,000 trees, environmental organisation LIFEAgrOassis will launch its campaign on Friday in Pera Orinis, Pyrga and Anglisides.
The goal of the project is to plant the trees and shrubs around Cyprus by 2026, creating approximately 30km of hedgerows.
A total of 7,000 trees and shrubs will be planted in November and December.
The programme aims to protect agriculture in areas at risk of drought caused by climate change.
According to LIFEAgrOassis, the programme will promote the planting of traditional hedgerows with deep roots, an innovative method developed in the desert of Arizona, USA. This will be the first time it is carried out in Europe.
These plants reduce irrigation needs and enhance the resistance of plants to drought.
The programme is co-financed by the European Union.
