RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The home of the North Carolina State football program may soon be called by a new name.
N.C. State leaders announced Monday the athletics department has partnered with a sports marketing agency to identify a potential naming rights partner for Carter-Finley Stadium.
“With the blessing of the Carter and Finley families, we are able to pursue this opportunity to enhance our program in the new landscape of college athletics,” N.C. State athletics director Boo Corrigan said in a released statement. “We are grateful for their support through the years and for their understanding of our need to explore new revenue sources to invest in the development and success of our student-athletes.”
The university is partnering with Independent Sports and Entertainment, which specializes in venue naming rights revenue generation opportunities in the college athletics space. The agency has successfully undergone eight searches in the past two years, generating over $180 million for different universities on campuses nationwide.
“We have had great conversations with both families and will keep them informed of all potential options,” Corrigan added.
Carter-Finley Stadium opened its doors in 1966 and currently holds a seating capacity of 56,919 seats. It was originally named after Harry and W.J. “Nick” Carter, a pair of N.C. State graduates who were major contributors to the original building of the stadium. The name of Albert E. Finley, another major contributor to the university, was added in September 1979.
