The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced on Friday that more than 30,000 people, most of them Syrians, crossed from Lebanon into Syria during the past three days, amid the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which has claimed hundreds of lives in Lebanon.
Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, UNHCR representative in Syria, said that about 80 percent of those crossing the border are Syrians and about 20 percent are Lebanese.
He added that half of them are children and minors, and that the number of men crossing is less than women.
He continued, saying in a press conference, “They are crossing from a country at war to a country that has been facing a crisis for 13 years,” and described this as an extremely difficult choice.
“We will see in the next few days how many will follow suit,” he added.
