‘More cyberattacks possible, no need to panic’

‘More cyberattacks possible, no need to panic’

After the cyberattacks on Hermes Airports, Bank of Cyprus and the Electricity Authority, Commissioner of Communications George Michaelides said there may be more to come.

Michaelides told the Cyprus News Agency that it would be unwise to panic, however it would also not be right for someone to say that now they could rest assured.

Asked if the cyberattacks were repercussions from the Middle East crisis, Michaelides said they could happen any time and that the state authorities were on alert at all times.

“We are not doing anything different due to the situation in the Middle East. We are working 24/7,” he said.

Michaelides said that Cyprus is prepared to deal with cyberattacks but that on the other hand no one could say they were fully prepared. “The person who says that is surely the next victim,” he added.

The commissioner said it was important to be prepared so that if attacked one could recover fast, adding that there were always some organisations more prepared than others.

Referring to the cyberattacks of the past couple of days, Michaelides said the public had not been affected.

He said the digital security authority was a member of the European cybersecurity network, which assisted countries whenever necessary.

Asked about LulzSec Black hacker group’s statement that it would be targeting key infrastructure in Cyprus, Michaelides said there was no need to panic, just a need to be prepared.

Michaelides said that after the threats were made, organisations in Cyprus were informed and given advice on additional measures to take.
