Minister reaffirms Cyrus action to tackle climate change at COP

Cyprus’ commitment to implementing decisive actions against the climate crisis was reaffirmed by Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou during her participation in the COP29 meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, the ministry announced on Sunday.

After intensive consultations, an agreement was reached early on Sunday on more funding for the effort to mitigate the climate crisis, which lays the foundations for the establishment of a new collective quantified funding target of $300 billion to support developing countries. This funding is linked to the strengthening of nationally determined contributions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, it was decided to strengthen adaptation strategies for climate change with a focus on protection against irreversible impacts.

Panayiotou participated in COP 29 working groups at the level of ministers of EU member states, contributing to the formulation of the EU’s common positions on climate policy. UNSG Antonio Guterres joined one of these groups, stressing the importance of collective action.

Panayiotou reaffirmed Cyprus’ commitment to implement decisive actions against the climate crisis.

“She referred to the importance of cooperation to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and underlined the urgent need for a coordinated international approach to strengthen the resilience of societies to the impacts of climate change,” the ministry said.

At the same time, she underlined Cyprus’ initiatives to promote sustainability at regional level.

The EU’s common positions focus on accelerating action to tackle the climate crisis through cooperation between governments, businesses and civil society. These positions will be further discussed at global level, with the European Union taking the lead in promoting a green and fair energy transition.
