A 31-year-old man was sentenced to one year in prison on Thursday for setting fire to the house he was living in on September 26 in Nicosia.
Police said the man was renting the house in Ayios Dhometios. The house belonged to a 67-year-old.
Nicosia district court heard that on September 26, just before 11pm, a fire broke out in the house, causing extensive damage.
The police and fire department determined it was arson and arrested the 31-year-old shortly after midnight. On September 27, he was taken before the Nicosia district court, which issued an eight-day remand order.
Having completed their investigation, the police filed a case for immediate trial.
The 31-year-old admitted to arson and was handed a one-year jail sentence.
