An earthquake measuring five on the Richter scale hit off the coast of Cyprus on Friday evening.
According to Turkey’s disaster and emergency management directorate (Afad), the earthquake occurred at 9.13pm Cyprus time at a distance of 74 kilometres from the Turkish city of Alanya, thus northwest of Morphou Bay.
The earthquake’s epicentre was 34km below the surface.
According to initial reports, people in both Alanya and the popular Turkish resort city of Antalya were seen taking to the streets to see what had happened, while some in Cyprus also felt the earthquake.
Alanya district governor Fatih Urkmezer said there had been “no reports of loss of life or property” in the city.
