Kevin Doyle compares Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez to former Southampton striker Shane Long
Former Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle while speaking to The Mirror after Uruguay’s 0-0 draw against South Korea, believes there is a lot to come from Darwin Nunez and has compared the striker to Shane Long, who was playing for Southampton until last season.
Doyle was asked of a player that played alongside him who shared similar similarities with Nunez and the striker named Shane Long due to both the players being pacey and raw at the initial stages of the career.
“He was one sort of like Nunez, raw, maybe a couple of chances needed. But when you have that pace, you have half a chance.
“If you have that pace and can get coaching and you’re willing to learn and willing to listen – Nunez looks like that, willing to learn and listen.
“When I was younger with Shane Long he was that type of player; willing to learn, willing to listen and willing to be patient.
Nunez missed a few chances in the game against South Korea but Doyle has positive views about the player and believes with good coaching, he can become a top, top player.
The Uruguayan was part of a big-money transfer from SL Benfica in the summer but failed to convince many in his initial days as a Liverpool player.
A red card against Crystal Palace certainly did not help but with time, Nunez has adapted to life at Anfield. Long, meanwhile, has had a career that hasn’t made waves in European football, and Nunez will hope to do better than that.
Some would argue he already has. It is still early days in his career at Liverpool and one could argue that the player does require proper coaching on certain technical aspects.
He is under the guidance of one of the best coaches in the world, which would certainly ease the job. Even for the Uruguayans against South Korea in their 0-0 draw, Nunez was a livewire down the left flank and while he did miss one gilt-edge chance when he did not connect with a cross, he was visibly their best outlet in attack.

There is no doubt that Nunez has everything to become a success at Liverpool and as supporters, all we can do is provide the utmost support to the player who could potentially lead our line for the coming years.
