Koury project rejected by Mebane planning board but headed to City Council for final vote

Koury project rejected by Mebane planning board but headed to City Council for final vote

Mebane’s planning board unanimously recommended rejecting a rezoning requested by Greensboro’s Koury Corporation for a mixed residential-retail project on the city’s western edge, but the company is taking its case to the City Council in December.

The planning board’s decision came after a two-hour meeting at which several residents spoke against the project. Objections by both residents and planning board members included inconsistencies with the city’s long-term plan for industrial and integrated residential development, as well as effects on traffic, lighting and noise.

Koury proposes 645 apartments and 38 townhomes along with shopping center with outparcels for the 83-acre site on Trollingwood Hawfields Road at Rowland Lane and Third Street Extension. The site is in Mebane’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, and Koury would need to have it annexed into the city before connecting to municipal utilities.
