Kombos calls for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages and a surge in humanitarian aid.

Kombos held a series of meetings on Monday, on the sidelines of the UN general assembly.

He wrote on X platform that he had an ”insightful and in-depth meeting today in New York with the Palestinian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr Mohammad Mustafa.”

”During the discussion, I underlined Cyprus’ support to key PA reforms, and for the two-state solution in line with UN Security Council resolutions. On Gaza, I reiterated urgent need for an immediate ceasefire, release of hostages and surge in humanitarian aid,” Kombos added.

He said ”Cyprus is also closely following the developments in the region-at-large and is extremely concerned.”

“We reiterate our call for utmost restraint,” the post concluded.

Kombos also wrote on X that he had a ”productive meeting with the Foreign Minister of Somalia Mr Ahmed Moallim Fiqi Ahmed, today in New York”, during which ”bilateral relations and EU-Somalia ties were discussed”.

”I wished Somalia a successful tenure as a UNSC non-permanent member for 2025-26”, he added.

Kombos, who met with his Australian counterpart, said on X that “Cyprus-Australia ties, based on shared values and strong people-to-people contacts, were reaffirmed during my exchange with Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, today in New York.”

They “also discussed regional developments and cooperation in multilateral fora.”
