Jordanian King Abdullah II on Sunday tasked his office director and former Minister of Planning Jaafar Hassan with forming a new government to succeed Bisher Al-Khasawneh’s government, which submitted its resignation, the Jordanian Royal Court reported.
The statement of the Royal Court said, “On Sunday, King Abdullah assigned Dr. Jaafar Hassan to form a new government, succeeding the government of Dr. Bisher Al-Khasawneh, whose resignation His Majesty accepted.”
Hassan (56 years old) is married and the father of three children. He holds a PhD in Political Science and International Economics from the University of Geneva, a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard University, a Master’s in International Relations from Boston University, and a Bachelor’s in International Relations from the American University of Paris.
Hassan served as Minister of Planning in previous governments and was Chargé d’Affaires and Deputy Ambassador of Jordan to Washington (2001-2006). He also worked as an attaché in the Jordanian Foreign Ministry in the 1990s.
A second statement said, “King Abdullah accepted the resignation of Dr. Bisher Al-Khasawneh’s government on Sunday” and tasked it with “continuing to handle business until the new government is formed and begins its work.”
The official Al-Mamlaka channel had previously indicated that “the government of Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh submitted its resignation on Sunday after completing the twentieth parliamentary elections.”
It is customary after every parliamentary election held every four years for the government to submit its resignation to the Jordanian monarch, who assigns a new prime minister to form a new government.
