Is Israel carrying out a ground operation in Lebanon? Halevy: We have difficult days ahead of us

T+ T – Normal size

After the assassination of Lebanese Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah in a precise air strike, Israeli Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevy indicated the possibility of an incursion into Lebanon today, Saturday.

Halevy said he completed an assessment of the situation and approved plans for the Northern Command of the Armed Forces at the command headquarters in the city of Safed in northern Israel.

He added in a video clip published by the army: “We have difficult days ahead of us.” He explained that the Israeli army was “on high alert, both defensively and offensively, on all fronts,” adding that they were prepared for what was coming.

Israel has long demanded that Hezbollah withdraw about 30 kilometers north of the Israeli-Lebanese border, beyond the Litani River, in line with Security Council Resolution 1701, which was approved years ago.

Israel seeks to ensure the safety of its citizens in northern Israel through this step. Observers speculate that Israel may try to achieve this goal with a ground attack on Lebanon.
