“I committed a levity” – Il Tempo

“I couldn’t understand what was happening, it was like finding yourself in the ring and hearing blows, punches raining down, without understanding who they were coming from. Would I do it again? Never again! It was a moment of human weakness, I apologize”. Aboubakar Soumahoro speaks to “Piazzapulita”, by Corrado Formigli, during the episode of Thursday 24 November. Forty-two years old, born in the Ivory Coast, a former shoe shiner, labourer, bricklayer and porter. And then trade unionist and parliamentarian today forced to suspend himself from the Verdi-Left Alliance group after the investigation into coops and migrants overwhelmed his partner Liliane Murekatete and her mother-in-law. A real political case has now broken out around him.

“Those who accuse me today have returned to being part of the USB, an organization with which I have a dispute, after joining the Lega Braccianti with me. They went back because they had asked me to give them the money from the donations in the form of a salary. I refused,” Soumahoro tells the host of LA7 who interviews him after the attacks by former colleagues of the Lega Braccianti regarding 56,500 euros that would not have been accounted for on a budget of 220 thousand euros. The parliamentarian overwhelmed by the media storm that exploded around the case had recorded a video in tears but, now, in Formigli he confesses that he regrets it.

“I am in a position to produce all the evidence – explained Soumahoro – the money was spent on the purchase of food, disinfectant gel, transport, and the remaining 56,800 went in the 2021 financial year. The budget is available on the website of the Labor League”. Faced with questions from the presenter who would like to help him explain how things went, the parliamentarian prevaricates: “I wasn’t paying attention to what was in my house while I was touring the country”. And again: “I didn’t know anything but if I had been aware of an investigation into the cooperatives managed by my mother-in-law I wouldn’t have applied”. what to answer. “There is an operator who said that she frequented the coops. When you went to the Formigli migrant centre-question-didn’t you see the undignified conditions of those reception centres? If you don’t know it’s serious…”.

Then the request for clarification on the payments never paid. “In 2018 there had been a cut in funding – Formigli recalls – but then in 2021 the money was found and compensation amounted to 240 thousand euros. It appears that his family members open a resort in Rwanda but the migrants from the coop? Was he unaware of everything?”. “Those who accuse me today have returned to being part of the USB, an organization with which I have a dispute, after joining the Lega Braccianti with me. They went back because they had asked me to give them the money from the donations in the form of a salary. I refused”. Finally, Soumahoro denied having ever used the money from the donations to finance his political rise: “Never, I just lost out”.
