Highway fully reopens after semi-truck erupts into flames on North Carolina interstate

ZEBULON, N.C. (WNCN) – Several emergency crews responded to a fiery crash involving two tractor-trailers in Wake County on Monday morning.

According to the N.C. Department of Transportation, the crash occurred on the southbound lanes of Interstate 87 near Exit 9, which is located near Smithfield Road. DOT cameras show footage of crews attempting to extinguish the fire.

N.C. State Highway Patrol told CBS 17 that one person was hurt as a result of the crash, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The roadway closed near Exit 9 at around 7:35 a.m. and was shut down for several hours, but has since reopened, NCDOT officials said.

State troopers said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
