Grandson accused of killing his 86-year-old grandmother in Moravian Falls

MORAVIAN FALLS, N.C. (WGHP) — A man is facing a charge of murder after being accused of killing his 86-year-old grandmother, according to the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office.

At around 9:18 p.m. on Monday, the Alexander County 911 center got a call from a concerned family member requesting a welfare check at a home on the 100 block of Russel Gap Road in Moravian Falls.

When deputies arrived at the home, no one answered the door. They made their way inside and found 86-year-old Betty Kerley Tedder dead inside the home.

Investigators say that Tedder was suffering “from apparent trauma.”

Deputies later found 39-year-old Nathan Lee Lowe inside the home. He was arrested and charged with murder as well as malicious conduct by a prisoner.

Lowe is being held without bond and will make his first appearance in court on Dec. 2.

Investigators say that Lowe is Tedder’s grandson.

According to North Carolina Department of Adult Correction records, Lowe served three years in prison from Feb. 2021 to April 2024 and is currently on post-release parole.

Inmate release records from the department of correction show that Lowe was released on parole or a return to parole on April 3, 2024.

Records also show that Lowe was convicted on a charge of felony breaking and entering on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024. Lowe was given a suspended sentence and probation for a period of 24 months.
