Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis discussed bilateral ties and the Cyprus issue during a meeting with UK’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy in London.
The pair agreed to upgrade the bilateral cooperation between the two states and the UK had raised security issues and noted that cooperation with Greece was necessary, according to diplomatic sources relayed by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).
Prospects for further deepening trade ties and cooperation over shipping and education were also discussed.
As regards the Cyprus issue the state officials discussed how they could contribute towards a process for solution on the basis of United Nations security council resolutions, with both countries in support of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.
The Greek side expressed its readiness to participate in an expanded five-party informal conference when deemed appropriate by the UNSG and to play a constructive role.
The British government, as a guarantor, said that it has not received an invitation for such a conference, but when it does it will respond to its role.
Gerapetritis and Lammy also discussed bilateral cooperation over the next two years in view of the states’ joint participation in the UNSC following the election of Greece as a non-permanent member.
The discussion included Ukraine and situation in the Middle East as well as EU-UK relations. Diplomatic sources said that they also broached the issue of the Parthenon marbles, although the matter does not fall within the competence of the British foreign secretary.
Lamy posted a statement on “X” with a photo with his Greek counterpart, saying:
“Our European allies are essential for UK security and growth. FM George Gerapetritis joined me in London today to discuss strengthening UK-Greece ties. We are prioritising international trade, protecting our shared values and our role as committed NATO members.”
