US President Joe Biden briefly donned a campaign hat for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday, in a move the White House said was aimed at showing “unity” on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
The red hat that reads “Trump 2024” was worn by Biden during an event at a fire station in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United Flight 93 crashed on Sept. 11, 2001.
White House spokesman Andrew Bates said Biden visited the center on the 23rd anniversary of the attacks to emphasize the country’s unity.
He added that during this visit, in a “friendly” gesture, Biden offered a hat to a Trump supporter, and the supporter responded by saying, “In the same spirit, the president should wear a Trump hat,” and the president briefly wore it.
A video clip that spread on social media showed Biden smiling while wearing a hat with a red cap on top that said “Trump 2024.”
Republicans were quick to exploit the image of the US President wearing the distinctive Trump logo on his head.
“Thanks for the support, Joe!” the Republican billionaire’s campaign wrote on Twitter, in a sarcastic tone.
This initiative came from the Democratic president the day after the first debate between Donald Trump and his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.
In connection with this debate, the Trump team said via X that “Kamala Harris was so bad in yesterday’s debate that Joe Biden just put on a Trump hat.”
