Former Italy star Camoranesi close to joining Karmiotissa, sources say

Former Juventus and Italy national team star Mauro Camoranesi is close to being appointed as manager of Cypriot football club Karmiotissa, according to sources who spoke exclusively to the Cyprus Mail.

If he were to join, Camoranesi would replace previous manager Sofronis Avgousti who left his position as Karmiotissa’s manager earlier this week by mutual consent, after overseeing just four competitive matches since July 2024.

Avgousti is expected to become the new manager of Cyprus’ national team, taking over from Temur Ketsbaia, who left the job after a 4-0 defeat at home against Kosovo in the Uefa Nations League on September 9.

Cyprus’ next fixture is at home against Romania in the Nations League on October 12, before they travel to Prishtina for the return fixture against Kosovo three days later.

Camoranesi, a World Cup winner with Italy, had a diverse playing career spanning from clubs like Juventus to stints in Mexico and Argentina.

His managerial record is equally varied. He began coaching in Mexico with Coras de Tepic, followed by brief periods at Tigre and Tapachula, before moving to Europe to manage Tabor Sezana and Maribor.

Most recently, Camoranesi managed Maltese club Floriana, where he achieved his best managerial win percentage of 67.74 per cent.
