Former Gravesham MP Adam Holloway considers standing for a seat at Kent County Council in May 2025

Former Kent MP Adam Holloway is considering standing for a seat on Kent County Council next May.

Mr Holloway, 59, served as MP for Gravesham between 2005 and 2024, but was unseated by the then leader of the Labour group at KCC, Dr Lauren Sullivan at the general election,

Now he has been approached to consider the idea of becoming a candidate in 2025 when all 81 seats are up for grabs.

Mr Holloway told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “The answer is, yes, it has been mentioned but I just don’t know yet and I haven’t decided. Let’s see.

“Someone had this idea that I should keep up my profile to voice the opposition to house building and to argue for a new Dartford bridge rather than the Lower Thames Crossing. But it wasn’t my idea to stand and I haven’t made up my mind.”

The former soldier – who was a Captain in the Grenadier Guards and served in the Gulf War – said that Dr Sullivan’s slender majority of 2,712 is “not a majority at all”.

Mr Holloway argues that the July 2024 election result was caused by Reform UK polling 8,910, largely at his expense.

But many observers believe that Gravesham can be regained by the Tories.

In Boris Johnson’s 2019 landside victory, Mr Holloway gained a 15,581 majority and he warned Reform UK remain a threat until his party has “Conservative policies”.

If he does decide to seek a candidacy, at least one of the Gravesham divisions may become free if Cllr Bryan Sweetland, the current KCC chairman, steps away from the authority next May.

Mr Holloway described Cllr Sweetland as a “first class county councillor”.

A Tory KCC source said: “Adam would be a really strong addition to the squad at County Hall. He’s a force to be reckoned with.

“We have to wake up to the fact that we might be in opposition this time next year and we’ll need the best that we can get.”
