Footballer Luke Fleurs (24), called up several times for selection by Hugo Broos, was killed

In the past, Fleurs had sometimes been called up by national coach Hugo Broos to the A national team, but he had not appeared in action. He was, however, part of the under-23 squad with which South Africa competed at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

According to police, the footballer was waiting to be served in his Volkswagen Golf when two armed men in a car suddenly appeared. The suspects threatened him with a gun and forced him out of the vehicle, after which they shot him in the upper body. One of the suspects fled in the victim's vehicle, followed by his accomplice. Fleurs was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Police have opened an investigation and are searching for the perpetrators, but no arrests had been made as of Thursday morning. Please note that violent crime is a frequent problem in South Africa.
