All football in the north was cancelled over the weekend after a referee was kicked in the head by a footballer during a match on Saturday.
The incident occurred during a second-tier match between Canakkale and Vadili in Famagusta. With a quarter of an hour remaining in the game and Canakkale 1-0 up, Canakkale player Hasan Cagakan Caka launched a flying kung-fu kick at referee Mustafa Torun’s head.
He had been angered by Torun’s decision to send one of his teammates off and remonstrated with him. After he was also sent off, he removed his shirt and launched the kung-fu kick.
The match was immediately abandoned and Torun was taken to hospital, where it was determined that he had suffered a fractured left cheekbone. Caka was arrested.
No football was played in the north on Sunday or Monday as a result, with the cancelled matches having all been rescheduled for Tuesday, which is a public holiday in the north.
