Fire destroys food packaging facility in Alethriko

A food packaging facility in Alethriko, in the Larnaca district, was completely destroyed by a fire that broke out on Tuesday night.

According to the police, the fire ignited around 8.20pm at the facility on Anexartisias avenue, along the old Larnaca-Limassol road.

The fire was first noticed by facility workers who were walking to their nearby accommodation at the time.

Seven fire engines from the Larnaca fire stations and a search and rescue team (Emak) unit were deployed to contain the blaze.

Members of the nearby Kofinou police station and of the Larnaca CID also visited the scene for on-site investigations. The area was cordoned off and remains under guard, as further examinations to determine the cause of the fire are set to continue on Wednesday.

Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said on X that the facility was used for packaging organic olive oil and carob syrup products.

He confirmed that the building, equipment, and products were completely destroyed by the fire, although the olive mill on-site was unaffected.

Firefighting efforts continued overnight and will resume on Wednesday due to the flammable materials involved. A full investigation into the cause of the fire will take place once the fire is fully extinguished and the building’s structural integrity is assessed.
