An autumn of local film screenings is approaching as the Cyprus Film Archive (Kypriaki Tainiothiki) organises a series of Cypriot film nights. The screenings will fill November and December’s cultural agenda by hosting screenings in numerous towns mainly in Nicosia (across the divide), Famagusta, Limassol and Paphos.
The films shown will be split into two thematic cycles – Green Line Films and Films of Reconciliation and Reunification. Nicosia will be the first to welcome the film nights, running throughout November and the first half of December. Three venues will host them, all in the old town – Yfantourgeio, Arabahmet (a cultural centre in north Nicosia, a three-minute walk from Ledra Street crossing) and CVAR Severis Foundation.
All films will be presented in their original language with Greek subtitles for Greek-speaking audiences and Turkish subtitles for Turkish-speaking audiences. Some Greek Cypriot films at Yfantourgeio will have only English subtitles while the films at CVAR will be in the original language with English subtitles for English-speaking audiences.
The first three screenings will take place at Yfantourgeio and they are coming up this week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Under the Stars by Christos Georgiou, Mixed Winds by Yiannis Ioannou and Roads and Oranges. There will be almost daily screenings throughout November, split between the three venues.
The following film night, on November 4, will take place at Arabahmet showing Panikos Chrysanthou’s Our Wall. The next few screenings will return to Yfantourgeio (November 8 to 10) screening the films Shadows and Faces by Dervis Zaim, Road to Ithaca by Costas Demetriou and The Handkerchief by Chrystalla Avgousti.
Nearly daily screenings will continue throughout the month with CVAR Severis Foundation hosting them towards the end of November. On November 19, CVAR will feature Searching for Selten, by Antonis Agastiniotis, on November 22 Details in Cyprus by Panikos Chrysanthou and on November 23 Trimithi by Andreas Pantzis. The films at CVAR that will include English subtitles will be Akamas, screened on November 26, The Handkerchief on November 28 and Parallel Travels on November 29.
In the Famagusta district, the screenings are organised with the two Famagusta municipalities and will take place at the Cultural Center of Famagusta Municipality in Deryneia and the Pantopoleio in the old walled city of Famagusta. Deryneia will host film nights on November 20, 25, 28 and December 2 and 4. In Famagusta, the screenings will be held on November 21, 24, 27 and 29 and December 1. Details of each film screening with the film duration, subtitles and summaries will be published each week by the Cyprus Film Archive.
The Panos Solomonides Cultural Centre in Limassol will host more film nights from November 5 to 8 and November 10, 15, 25 and 26. In Paphos, the screenings will take place at the Paphos House of Letters and Arts and will start with Smuggling Hendrix on December 5, The Story of the Green Line on December 6, Flowers and Bullets on the following evening and conclude with Akamas on December 11.
