New month, new events and a rich cultural agenda. As we enter the final month of the year, the island’s arts scene is on its final stretch to showcase local talent and mark significant occasions. Approaching soon is a group exhibition in Larnaca.
Larnaca Municipality and EKATE present Exploring Cypriot Topography – Unity Amidst Division. Fifty artists will take part to mark 50 years since the invasion and occupation, in a retrospective of Cypriot art inspired by the topography of the island.
Opening on December 11, the exhibition marks a reflection of the topography of the island, combining the natural beauty, historical significance and continuous transformations of Cyprus, as seen through visual art. Through visual exploration and storytelling, a journey is created in the heart of Cyprus, from the ancient ruins to its modern cities, from its picturesque coasts to its steep mountains.
This unique exhibition covers three generations of Cypriot artists. Works by iconic figures who left their mark on the country’s culture, reflect the island’s topographical evolution during periods of political change, while emerging artists present their own interpretations of Cypriot landscapes in the context of contemporary life. From abstract representations to realistic depictions, the exhibition weaves a narrative of the complex history of Cyprus and its connection to the land that defines it.
It reflects the deep connection between the earth and human identity. Marking 50 years since the invasion, the artworks included are a tribute to the enduring spirit of the land, the cultural resilience of its people and the deep imprint left by the island’s topography on artistic expression.
“The topography, in its physical and metaphorical sense, plays a leading role in the experience of the exhibition,” says curator Katerina Stavrou. “This exhibition is not just a celebration of the island’s natural beauty, but a reflection of how art has responded to the land and the experiences of its people. Presenting works by both established and emerging artists, we invite the viewer to participate in a dialogue about the island’s past, present and future, through the narrative of the landscape.”
