The European STOXX 600 index closed down 0.4 percent, dissipating its gains after rising by about 0.5 percent during the day.
Contrary to the market trend, shares of heavy energy companies jumped 1.3 percent, tracking oil’s gains.
Shares of German defense company Rheinmetall jumped 5.1 percent, and shares of Swedish company Saab gained 3.5 percent.
Company shares rose Covestro 3.8 percent after Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) said it had concluded a deal to buy the chemicals manufacturer for 14.7 billion euros ($16.3 billion), including debt.
