European Commission President arrives in Kyiv to discuss support for Ukraine

T + T – Normal size

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today that she had arrived in Kyiv to discuss Europe’s support for Ukraine, winter preparations, defense and progress on G7 loans.

“My eighth visit to Kyiv comes as the heating season approaches and Russia continues to target energy infrastructure,” she wrote on the X platform.

Yesterday, it announced that 160 million euros from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets will be allocated to meet Ukraine’s urgent humanitarian needs this winter.

Russia has destroyed Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with a capacity of about nine gigawatts, which von der Leyen said was “equivalent to the energy of the three Baltic states.”

She added that the European Union aims to restore the capacity to generate 2.5 gigawatts of electricity, and will work to increase exports to supply Ukraine with about two gigawatts of electricity.

Von der Leyen will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other officials.
