Escaped lifer and accomplice in court

Under draconian police measures, convict Doros Theofanous appeared in court on Tuesday with a 26-year-old man charged of being his accomplice to help him escape prison.

The two appeared before Paphos criminal court and were slated to make their plea over their charges.

Theofanous’ defence team Alexandros Alexandrou, Savvas Matsas and Eleni Alexandrou were ready to make the plea, however lawyer Ilias Satolias, representing the 26-year-old asked for more time.

Court adjourned the hearing until November 6 at 9:30am.

Both men face charges of conspiring to commit a crime between an unknown date and September 26.

Theofanous also faces charges related to escape from detention, while the 26-year-old of assisting him.

Both remain in detention until their hearing.

Theofanous’ escape from guard watch during a home visit while serving prison time sparked a nationwide manhunt. He was eventually captured in Limassol after being on the run for three days.

President Nikos Christodoulides fired the police chief, deputy police chief and the acting prison director as a result.
