Environmental education begins in Akrotiri

Visits of schoolchildren have begun at the Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre (AAEC), with a total of 500 children having visited since the beginning of the school year.

The AAEC said on Tuesday that its “expert team” has “prepared key environmental programmes for both primary and secondary school pupils”, all of which have been devised in conjunction with Cyprus’ education ministry.

Around 140 visits to the centre are expected during this school year, with the AAEC’s manager Thomas Hadjikyriakou saying the programmes devised “provide opportunities for both teachers and pupils to approach ecological and cultural matters in the real environment.”

Environmental expert Koula Michael, who works at the centre, said the programmes offer children “the opportunity to come into contact and interact with the natural environment of the Akrotiri peninsula through various activities”.

This, she said, will allow them to “develop a deeper understanding of the world around them”.
