Election 2024: Montgomery County records turnout of more than 80 percent

NORRISTOWN — Montgomery County’s election results are still being calculated Wednesday morning, more than 12 hours after the polls closed on Election Day.

Tabulation efforts continued overnight and a county official anticipated counting to wrap up this morning.

“Democracy, as we know, is a community effort and we are all doing our part,” Montgomery County Election Board Vice Chairwoman Jamila Winder said during a Tuesday night press conference.

There were 511,032 ballots cast in the 2024 general election, resulting in an 80.76 voter turnout rate, according to figures from the Montgomery County Office of Voter Services. The agency recorded 632,919 registered voters.

The election’s in-person component had 345,741 in-person votes cast across 426 precincts. There were 173,094 mail-in and absentee ballots returned by the time the polls closed on Election Day, and 165,291 ballots counted as of 8 a.m. Wednesday.

In Montgomery County, the presidential election between Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former president Donald Trump had Harris leading with 308,264 votes to Trump 193,400’s votes, according to unofficial election results. Green Party candidate Jill Stein followed with 2,896 votes, and Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver received 2,450 votes. Another 2,183 “unresolved write-in votes” were also recorded.

The Associated Press reported Trump taking Pennsylvania, leading by 155,427 votes, or 50.7 percent, to Harris’ 48.4 percent. Trump had 277 Electoral College votes across the nation while Harris had 224.

Another high profile race was between incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey and Republican Dave McCormick, both vying for the U.S. Senate seat representing Pennsylvania. Montgomery County voters cast 303,289 for Casey and 191,602 for McCormick. Third-party candidates followed with Libertarian John C. Thomas with 5,384 votes, Green Party candidate Leila Hazou with 4,805 votes and Constitution Party candidate Marty Selker with 1,121 votes. Another 447 “unresolved write-in votes” were reported.

Pennsylvania’s Senate race has not yet been called, according to the Associated Press. McCormick was leading by 51,965 votes, with 97 percent of votes across Pennsylvania reported so far.

Also representing Montgomery County constituents was a Congressional race between incumbent U.S. Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-4th Dist. and Republican David Winkler. Dean was leading with 231,238 votes to Winkler’s 139,113 votes as of 8 a.m. Wednesday. An additional 686 “unresolved write-in votes” were reported.

Election board officials applauded the county’s participation in Tuesday’s election. The roughly 80 percent turnout rate was just shy of the 2020 general election’s turnout rate of 84.27 percent, the last presidential race between Trump and President Joe Biden.

“Montgomery County is obviously being watched very closely,” Montgomery County Election Board Chairman Neil Makhija said Tuesday night.

Counting for provisional, military and overseas ballots have not been counted yet. It’s unclear how many have been cast. Provisional ballot counting is expected to start on Nov. 8, while military and overseas ballot counting will begin on Nov. 12, according to the county’s voter services department.

All election results remain unofficial until certified by the Montgomery County Board of Elections.
