According to a statement Orascom Construction Listed on the NASDAQ Dubai and Egypt stock exchanges, the consortium has signed an extension of the power purchase agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company to add 150 megawatts to the power generated by the 500 megawatt wind farm currently under construction in Ras Ghareb, Egypt, bringing the total capacity of the plant after this increase to 650 megawatts.
The first phase of the station, with a capacity of 250 megawatts, is scheduled to start operating in December 2024, two months before the scheduled start-up date, according to the statement.
The remaining production capacity of the station will be gradually completed by the third quarter of 2025.
The consortium responsible for the project will work to produce an additional 150 megawatts by optimally exploiting the land plot adjacent to the main station, within an intensive timetable, which will ensure the start of the full production capacity of the station, amounting to 650 megawatts, by the third quarter of 2025, which was previously planned before the expansion, according to the statement.
The station will produce clean energy for more than one million homes in Egypt, and will reduce carbon emissions by about 1.3 million tons annually, contributing to increasing production capacities of clean and renewable energy in Egypt.
Egypt aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix to 42 percent by 2030, up from 11.5 percent in 2023.
It is noteworthy that the consortium of companies implementing the station had previously developed the Ras Ghareb wind station with a capacity of 262.5 megawatts, which is the first independent renewable energy project in Egypt, which has been operating since October 2019.
After the new project is operational, the alliance’s total wind energy production capacity in Egypt will increase to 912.5 megawatts.
