In line with its keenness to play its role in achieving the visions of the wise leadership aimed at making Dubai a friendly city for people of determination, and enhancing their effective integration into society, the Legal Affairs Department of the Government of Dubai held a remote knowledge workshop on the rights of people of determination in international agreements and local legislation, coinciding with the International Day of Sign Language.
The workshop, which was presented by the Department’s Legal Advisor/ Reda Mahmoud Al Sayed, and attended by more than (370) government agencies in the Emirate of Dubai and members of the public, addressed an introduction to the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, approved by the United Nations General Assembly, which the UAE was keen to join to support international efforts in this regard.
The workshop addressed the definition of protecting the rights of persons with disabilities in local legislation, through Law No. (3) of 2022 regarding the rights of persons with disabilities in the Emirate of Dubai, which aimed to establish a legal framework that guarantees the integration of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life, and grants them the right and ability to live independently on an equal footing with others, while involving them in drawing up government policies, plans, legislation and programmes, as well as decisions related to them, or that may affect their quality of life.
In introducing some of the services provided by the Department to people of determination, in order to consolidate its social responsibility, the workshop reviewed some of the enabling policies and initiatives, including preparing the Department’s facilities according to the best international standards and requirements that enable people of determination to benefit from them and use them easily, and forming a special working team to follow up on the implementation of any requirements related to their affairs, in addition to the indicative guide that includes the most important legal terms related to the Department’s tasks, and the services it provides to its clients.
