A total of 51 personalities have signed a petition calling on the president of the Republic to appoint a person who will promote a proposal for the establishment of UN headquarters in Cyprus.
In their petition, sent to the presidency, the political parties and the House, the personalities say such a move would greatly increase the sense of security of the people and would promote efforts to resume negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem.
“Big problems need big ideas,” the personalities point out.
They add that important international organisations have set up headquarters in northern Europe, including the EU, the UN, the European Court, the International Criminal Court, the European Central Bank, the European Investment Bank, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and Nato.
The petition is signed by former and active ambassadors, government officials, politicians, academics, activists, scientists, advisers, lawyers, journalists, writers, people of the arts and others.
